中國考古已從落后而居世界前列；同時，西方常有學者懷疑中國宗教的存在，其實宗教美術考古資源非常豐富。該成果體量大，可以全面反映考古成果，從而為宗教、美術，以及交叉學科研究提供理論張力和空間。
該成果有考古報告、研究文獻（含學術關注度表）和遺存年表三大塊，在完整性上很突出：首先，有著完整的信息資源。努力窮盡所有考古報告信息，覆蓋專業(yè)期刊、專題出版物，以及稀有材料三個資源。其次，有著完整的信息轉化體系。本書設立考古報告、研究文獻和學術關注度三個數(shù)據(jù)體系，相關信息盡量保留，比如所有已發(fā)表的遺存平面圖。再次，有第一次完整的遺存年表。本書創(chuàng)新制作了覆蓋墓室壁畫、佛教美術、道教美術、海上宗教美術的遺存年表，為學術界第一次。
